IFG's director of Sales and Marketing, 🎤 Matthew Murray, welcomes Cody Lucas, CEO of Elite Agency Insurance, into the IFG podcast studio to reflect on how he started his insurance career and what it takes to be a top-producing independent Medicare agency in today's market.
Cody explains that a friend pulled him into the industry. The culture was a selling point: "You see other people going in the direction you want, and it drawls you in." Starting as a captive agent initially, he shared that he was all in, licensed, and ready to sell within a month. Making multiple sales a day and more money than he has ever before.
After a few months, Cody wanted more, learning everything he could about the industry. He started talking to people, understanding what other opportunities were out there. Then teamed up with now partner Zachary Palumbo and started selling broadly as an independent agent to find something they could grow with to find their niche.
They brought on more people to expand to six agents. Cody shared that the goal was to build a sizeable agency focused on one business sector. It was under 65 private insurance back then, but they really liked Medicare. Admitting, they knew very little about it. "We want a legitimate product we can stand behind. Be proud that we are selling it, and come out to our friends and family that this is what we do. "
Cody enjoys helping the client navigate confusing waters. His grandmother was recovering from Cancer treatment, and Cody reflects, "If I could sell a product that we could stand behind that is legitimately backed by the government, and it's actually helping people truly making an impact, especially for seniors, the most underserviced and under-appreciated group in our country. It was big for us. You just felt good about it."
Cody shares how this is a great business to introduce to people. "Because they are going to have that same feeling. You go home and feel like you have made an impact." Simply explaining the facts surrounding Medicare and its benefits is a fantastic service to families. Cody reflects that despite much talk about the over-saturation of the Medicare market, many seniors still need help.
